Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches

Angels is a sweeping, soul-stirring epic that cracks open the American psyche at the height of the AIDS crisis. With wit, fury, and unflinching honesty, Kushner weaves together stories of love, betrayal, faith, and survival, exposing the raw wounds of a country grappling with illness, politics, and identity. The play’s characters—both real and fantastical—move between intimate heartbreak and cosmic revelation, demanding that we confront our deepest fears and our highest hopes. It is a work of towering imagination and urgent humanity, reminding us that even in the darkest times, transformation is possible.

Tony Kushner (Playwright)

Tony Kushner is an American playwright, screenwriter, and essayist whose work is celebrated for its intellectual rigor, political urgency, and deep humanity. Born in Manhattan and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Kushner grew up in a Jewish family and later studied at Columbia University before earning his MFA from New York University’s Graduate School of Arts and Science. He is best known for his monumental two-part play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes (1991–1992), which earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, two Tony Awards, and a place in the canon of modern American theater for its unflinching exploration of AIDS, homosexuality, politics, and spirituality in 1980s America. Kushner’s other notable stage works include Caroline, or Change (2003), a semi-autobiographical musical with composer Jeanine Tesori that blends the personal and political through the lens of the Civil Rights era, and Homebody/Kabul (2001), which grappled with Western perceptions of Afghanistan before and after 9/11. Beyond the stage, Kushner has had a distinguished career as a screenwriter, collaborating with director Steven Spielberg on Munich (2005), Lincoln (2012), West Side Story (2021), and The Fabelmans (2022), projects that showcase his ability to intertwine historical events with emotional depth and moral inquiry. A committed activist, he has been outspoken on issues of social justice, race, sexuality, and politics, often weaving these themes into his art with rare eloquence and ferocity. Honored with numerous awards, including a National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama in 2013, Kushner continues to be regarded as one of the most influential voices in contemporary theater and film, a writer whose work challenges audiences to confront both personal and collective truths.
